Volvo S60

2001-2009 - MK1

After introducing the new S80 flagship luxury sedan based on the P2 platform, Volvo launched the S60 sedan as a sportier option.

The new P2 platform offered an innovative approach with its new electronic equipment and OBD2 vehicle connectivity for diagnostic systems. In these new "OBD2" vehicles, the Engine Control Module (ECM) communicated with other computer modules via a high-speed CAN-BUS data network.

In these networked vehicles, advanced safety systems like the S60's DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) became possible. The DSTC module monitored data from wheel speed sensors and chassis accelerometers, and when it detected skidding, it sent commands to the Brake Control Module for active braking of the slipping wheels at different timings and to the Engine Control Module for power reduction.

The powertrains of the P2 S60s also integrated advanced computer control; the new AWD (All-Wheel Drive) system developed by Haldex engaged the rear wheels by detecting wheel lock during hard braking and wheel slip during acceleration.

Naturally aspirated, low-pressure turbo "2.4T" and "2.5T," as well as high-pressure "T5" turbo models, were equipped with either a 5-speed AW50/55 automatic or a 5-speed M56 manual transmission. In 2004, a new high-performance S60R model was introduced, featuring a 300hp turbo five-cylinder engine, standard AWD, and the Four-C active chassis system with unique interior and exterior trims. This system connected active suspension, DSTC, and throttle response settings through the vehicle's network.

S60R models equipped with 4C actively adjusted the stiffness of the dampers at each corner based on road undulations and chassis movements. Stiffness could be adjusted with selectable Comfort, Sport, and Advanced modes. Another unique feature of the S60R was a DSTC "reduced" mode that allowed some slip before the computer intervened.

The R models' M66 6-speed manual transmission was later adopted by other T5 P2 models; however, finding these 6-speed manual T5s proved quite challenging. In 2006, the 5-speed automatic transmission in the P2 R models was replaced with a 6-speed TF-80 automatic capable of handling the full 300lb-ft torque of the R engine, whereas the previous AW50/55 had limited torque to 258lb-ft to protect the 1st and 2nd gears.

R models were produced until 2007, while other S60 models continued until 2009.
